I thought I would share some of our moving tips. They are definitely not perfect, but they seemed to work really well for us. Moving is NO easy task, but at the same time, it's a perfect opportunity to get rid of things that are no longer needed.
A few weeks before the big move, we held a garage sale. I would definitely recommend doing something like that. But by far the most bang for our buck came from posting on Craigslist. We were able to sell some of our bigger ticket items, and get the amount we wanted. Win-win.
Once we had gotten rid of all the things we didn't want to take with us, we started the packing process.
What worked best for us, was to work room by room, packing the things that weren't needed on an every day basis (shocked to see how much we don't actually use all of the time!).
We then numbered the boxes, then wrote on a master list that contents of each box.
Then once everything was packed, we used laminated color labels for the location in the new place.
It made everything very organized & orderly.
When moving day came, our movers were pleasantly surprised to see the organized effort that went into the packing process. It definitely helped on the delivery day as well, the movers were able to distribute our boxes to the correct rooms.
So as much work as it is to move, I can definitely see how it helps to get a plan together so there is some control in the very tedious situation. :)
By the way, I found this awesome moving checklist from Tip Junkie that helped SO much. Lots to remember when you have to move out. :)

ooo thanks for the tips! We're moving in December and I will definitely try this system! I'm dreading it already!
I love your organization!!! It makes a huge difference when you jot everything down. When we move the military sends people in to pack your house (if you choose not to do it yourself) then you have a group of 3 to 4 guys packing up everything up. I try to make sure the right labels get on the right boxes but we always wind up with those random boxes that are labeled "kitchen" and your bathroom scale is in it. AH!
Thanks for sharing these tips you can never be too prepared when you have to pack your house up!
You are so organized! Love it. :)
Love how organized you are!! Thanks for the great tips! Have a great evening! xo Heather
I like that you labeled each of the boxes. It's a great tip. We used a different colored stripe of duck tape on each box to help in our moving process last year. I dread the moment when we leave our "starter house" for our "forever home" though as you really begin to amass a lot of unnecessary things when you have space to store them :-p
Great tips!! I did something similar...just not as pretty as yours! ;)
such a great tip. Although I hope to Never.Move.Again.In.My.Life. It really is one of my most hated things to do. I told my realtor I want to die in this house ha!

We just moved on Saturday. It is such a large task! We had a similar process, packing things which are not used so often a couple of days in advance does help take off some stress! Hope you are enjoying your new place!
Great tips. I think the #1 thing you can do to help reduce moving stress is be organized like you were. It may take a little bit more work upfront but definitely pays off in the end.
I love your color coded system! And the yard sale idea! Isn't it amazing to see how much stuff we have that we never use?!
Great tips Lindsay!! I gotta pin it for the future :)
I loved the garage sale and craigslist idea. Souds like an excellent way to ged rid from the old stuff you don't want to move. ;)
Really good post thanks !
Wow, I just started following and on of the first things that I see is your move. We are moving in less than two months. Thanks for the info, I am sure it is going to help.
