DIY {skirt}

Since I feel like I am kind of getting the hang of this whole 'sewing' thing, I decided to try something new. I was so inspired by the simplicity of this skirt tutorial, I figured I could do it as well, just tweak it some. I found the cutest red seersucker fabric from JoAnns (1 yard), that I knew would be perfect for it.

So here it goes--

For the pattern, I took one of my skirts that fit well, and used it as my guide. I placed my skirt on top of the doubled up fabric, and cut. I decided to add a strip of color to the bottom of it. You can make the strip as wide as you'd like, it's all personal preference.

I started with the striped fabric, putting the right sides together, so that the seem would run down the back side. Once the main fabric was attached, I added the strip of yellow to the bottom--right sides together, attaching it to the striped fabric. For the bottom of the yellow fabric, I turned it under 1/2 in. pressed, then sewed.

For the top, I measured my waist with an elastic band, sewed the elastic together, then pinned it to the inside of the skirt. I then folded the striped fabric over the elastic, and stitched them together.

Pretty easy, right?! I learned a few things as I went though. The main thing is to find fabric that is stretchy, or has some sort of give to it. I thought the cute red seersucker was more moveable than it actually is. Let's just say I won't be doing any dance moves in this little skirt--not like I would anyway, but just sayin'. :)

By the way, do you happen to notice the cute little tie that my little guy is wearing?? Yeah, I made that as well. Tutorial coming soon. :)

OK so this might be a dumb question. I keep seeing tutorials for these cute pencil style skirts and I have a question. Do you need to make some sort of zipper or does it stretch enough to just pull on??
These are so cute and I totally want to make one!
